Requirements
- The reasons why you were granted asylum still exist.
- Your main residence is in the Netherlands. This means that you live in the Netherlands and spend most of your time there.
- During the application for the residence permit you have now, you did not give any false information. And you did not withhold information.
- You are not a danger to public order or national security.
Process and costs
These are the steps in the application process for extension:

3. Apply open minusWill your residence permit expire within 6 months? Then you can apply for an extension.
Extend in time
You should apply for a renewal while your residence permit is still valid.
Did you apply too late?
Then you could lose your right to protection and other facilities in the Netherlands. The IND may also withdraw your residence permit.
Residence permit expired
Is your residence permit no longer valid? Then you should apply for an extension as soon as possible. This is only possible with the written application form.

5. Wait for decision on application open minusThe IND must take a decision within 6 months. This is called the decision period.
We can extend the decision period if it takes longer to decide. For example, because the application is not complete. In that case, the IND will send a message.

6. Working and identification during the application process open minusAre you allowed to work with your residence permit? Then you may continue working if you have applied for an extension before the end date of your current permit.
Foreign nationals identity document Type W
Do you need an identity document to prove who you are during the application process? Or has your employer asked for a valid identity document? Then you can apply for a Foreign nationals identity document (in Dutch: vreemdelingen identiteitsbewijs or VI) Type W. This document says who you are and that you may work during the processing of your application.
Apply for VI Type W with 8 to 4 weeks before your residence permit expires. When you collect the VI Type W you have to hand in your residence permit. You have to do this even if it is still valid.

7. Decision on application open minusThe decision is in the form of a letter and is positive or negative. The decision is the result of a reassessment of your situation.
- Positive decision: your residence permit will be extended.
- Negative decision: your residence permit will not be extended. This is stated in an initial (intended) decision by the IND. Do you disagree with the rejection? You can explain in a viewpoint (letter) to the IND why you disagree. A lawyer can also do this for you. You must arrange your own lawyer.
After the viewpoint, the IND will take a second decision that will be positive or negative. You can appeal against this decision to a Dutch court.

8. Collect residence permit open minusWhen the residence permit is ready at an IND desk, you will receive a letter. You must make an appointment to collect it. Make an appointment to collect your residence document.
